How the animal blood donor program works
A dog comes into a clinic after being hit by a tricycle. Or with advanced tick fever. Or bleeding after surgery. The vet knows exactly what is needed — whole blood, now — and then everyone starts making calls.
That is the part we are trying to fix.
The problem is logistics, not generosity
There is no shortage of owners willing to let their healthy dog donate. What is missing is a list. Without one, every emergency restarts the same search: who has a large dog, is it healthy, is the owner reachable at ten at night, can they get to the clinic.
By the time that is answered, hours have passed. Sometimes that is the whole margin.
What a registry changes
UDLFI's Animal Blood Donor Program Committee maintains a standing registry of pre-screened donor dogs, coordinated with partner veterinary clinics. When a clinic needs blood, they call the registry rather than the neighbourhood.
Screening happens in advance, calmly, instead of under pressure.
What donating involves
A donation takes roughly fifteen minutes. The dog lies on its side, usually with the owner present, while a unit is drawn from the jugular. Most dogs find it less stressful than a nail trim. Afterwards they get fluids, a good meal, and go home the same day.
Eligible dogs can typically donate a few times a year with no effect on their health.
What makes a dog eligible
Broadly: healthy, current on vaccinations, free of tick-borne disease, not on medication, generally over 25 kg, usually between one and eight years old, and calm enough to lie still for a quarter of an hour.
Final eligibility and blood typing are always determined by a partner veterinary clinic, never by the association. We maintain the list; the vets make the medical decisions. Nothing here is veterinary advice.
